Mid-engine balance, Ford V8 power, and a five-speed manual make this 1970s exotic truly different

A 1971 DeTomaso Pantera has just shown up on Bring a Trailer, and it is the kind of car that instantly pulls you in. It may not have the same fame as Ferrari or Lamborghini, but the Pantera has a strong personality of its own. Back in the 1970s, this car proved that you could mix Italian style with American power and still create something special.

The Pantera was the idea of Alejandro de Tomaso, an Argentine-born car builder who settled in Italy and wanted to do things differently. Instead of using a high-revving European engine, he went with a Ford V8. That decision gave the Pantera a deep, muscular sound and strong performance without making it overly complicated to maintain. Ford even helped sell the car through Lincoln-Mercury dealerships, which was almost unheard of for a mid-engine exotic at the time.

This 1971 model stays close to its roots. It is powered by a 351 cubic-inch Ford Cleveland V8 that makes about 310 horsepower. A five-speed manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels, giving drivers a raw and engaging experience. It is fast, loud, and very much a product of its era.

The car listed on Bring a Trailer looks well looked after. Recent work includes a new fuel pump, fresh gaskets, and cooling system service. The red paint still pops and suits the sharp body lines perfectly. The classic Campagnolo magnesium wheels add to its old-school charm.

With low mileage and a story that still excites car fans, this Pantera is more than just a classic. It is a reminder of a time when car makers took risks and built machines with real character. This auction is one worth watching.
