Luxury sedan’s future in doubt as SUVs dominate the market

The shift in car buyers’ preferences from sedans to SUVs over the past decade has claimed another possible victim. As per a recent report from Automotive News, it is likely that the Genesis G70 will be discontinued after the 2027 model year.

Industry insiders suggest that the compact luxury sedan will not get a second-generation model. It couldn’t be pulled from all markets worldwide, including South Korea. However, a Genesis spokesperson states, “We have no plans to discontinue the G70 at this time,” leaving the future uncertain.

The G70 made its debut in the U.S. market for the 2019 model year and received a major facelift in 2022, which featured a sleeker exterior design and a bigger, elegant infotainment screen. It currently sits alongside the G80 and G90 sedans in the lineup of Genesis. Recently, the automobile company has also confirmed that the Electrified G80 will be discontinued.

Sales figures show that the G70 is currently selling less than the SUV offerings. In 2024, it sold 12,258 units. It is a drop from 13,246 in the 2023 model year. On the other hand, the GV70 and GV80 sold 26,944 and 22,843 units, respectively. Through the first half of 2025, G70 sales are down 7 percent in comparison to the previous year. In the market of broader luxury sedans, it lags behind rivals, which include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Lexus IS.

If the G70 is indeed retired after 2027, it would mark the exit of Genesis’s most affordable model. The G70 currently starts at $44,845 for 2026. This would make the GV70 SUV the entry-level offering of the brand, which starts at $50,480.

For now, G70 fans will just have to wait and find out if the sedan can survive in the contemporary SUV-focused car market.
