A barely driven hypercar just rewrote the rules of collectible performance cars

The Porsche 918 Spyder is already one of the most respected modern supercars ever built. Now, one special example has taken its legacy to a whole new level. A low-mileage Porsche 918 Spyder with just 845 miles on the odometer has sold for a massive $6.05 million, setting a new auction record for the model.

The sale happened at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction, and it surprised even seasoned collectors. Until now, the highest price paid for a 918 Spyder was around $3.93 million. This sale went far beyond that, jumping more than $2 million higher and instantly becoming the most expensive 918 Spyder ever sold.

Mileage played a big role here. With only 845 miles driven since new, this 2015 model is basically untouched. Cars like the 918 Spyder were built to be driven hard, so finding one in this condition is extremely rare. Collectors value that kind of originality, especially when the car is already limited in numbers. Porsche built fewer than 1,000 units in total.

The color is another major reason this car stood out. It is finished in Pure Orange, a paint-to-sample option that cost over $21,000 when the car was new. This is believed to be the only 918 Spyder ever painted in this color. It is bold, loud, and impossible to ignore, which is exactly what collectors love.

This example also comes with the Weissach Package, a must-have option for serious buyers. It was designed to reduce weight and boost performance. The package includes carbon fiber parts, magnesium wheels, and a larger rear diffuser. Porsche managed to cut around 90 pounds from the car, which makes a difference at high speeds. A front axle lift system was also added to help deal with speed bumps and steep driveways.

Inside, the car matches its exterior perfectly. The interior accents follow the orange theme instead of the usual green trim found in many 918 Spyders. When this car was purchased new in 2014, the total price came close to $1 million. Seeing it now sell for over six times that amount shows just how much demand has grown.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is not just about looks or rarity. It changed the way people saw hybrid performance cars. When it launched, hybrids were mostly about saving fuel. Porsche proved they could also be brutally fast. The car uses a 4.6-liter V8 engine paired with two electric motors, sending power to all four wheels.

Together, the system produces 887 horsepower and delivers shocking performance. The 918 Spyder can hit 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds and reach speeds beyond 200 mph. Even today, those numbers still compete with the latest hybrid supercars.

Now that one 918 Spyder has crossed the $6 million mark, many expect prices for other low-mileage examples to rise as well. For now, this car sits at the top, proving that the 918 Spyder is no longer just a supercar. It is a serious collector icon.
