A bold new front design brings classic Mercedes charm to the modern electric era.

Mercedes-Benz is shaking the automobile industry up with a bold new look for its upcoming GLC EV. And it all starts at the front. The luxury automaker is giving this electric SUV a fresh face with an elegant, new grille. The automaker says that the new grille is a blend of classic design and modern flair.

The grille in the GLC EV is inspired by the brand’s history, particularly the iconic grid-style grilles that people have seen on cars like the 1902 Mercedes Simplex. Back then, those small square inlets were responsible for cooling the engine. At the present moment, the inlets are making a high-tech comeback in a new way.

Instead of functional vents, the GLC EV’s grille now features 942 backlit square-shaped LED elements. These tiny lights can even perform a choreographed welcome show when the driver unlocks the car. The large three-pointed star at the center also lights up, framed by a glowing outline for an extra premium touch.

If that looks a bit too fancy for your taste, Mercedes has a simpler option too. A non-illuminated version is also available. It keeps the same square pattern but replaces the LEDs with white glass-like plastic. You can choose between two colors (Silver Shadow or Dark Chrome Optic) for the perfect finishing touch.

This new grille will debut on the GLC EV at the Munich IAA Auto Show in September, but it likely won’t stop there. Mercedes plans to use this design on future models, including gas and hybrid vehicles, not just EVs.

With this update, Mercedes hopes to move away from the more generic front designs seen on past electric models. The bold grille gives the GLC EV a strong identity, which makes it instantly recognizable as a Mercedes-Benz. It’s a fresh start, and one that might finally win over more American buyers.
