Ford shifts production timeline for its upcoming electric truck and van, moving launch to 2028 while focusing on new affordable EV models.

Ford’s next-generation electric truck and van will take longer to hit the roads. Automotive News Report states that Ford has delayed the release of two new electric vehicles (a full-size pickup truck and a van) to 2028.

The electric truck, codenamed as ‘T3’ and expected to follow the F-150 Lightning, was first supposed to begin production in 2025. Then, it got delayed to 2026 and then to 2027. The automaker has informed its suppliers that production of the truck at its BlueOval City facility in Tennessee is now scheduled to start in 2028. This facility in Tennessee has a capacity to manufacture 500,000 trucks annually, and prototypes are predicted to roll out in 2027.

The electric van (possibly the next-generation E-Transit) has faced a similar type of journey. Initially planned to start by this decade’s middle, its production was later shifted to 2026 before being postponed again until 2028. The van will now be produced at Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, Ohio.

“We communicated timing adjustments for our next-gen electric van and electric full-size pickup to our suppliers and employees in June,” a spokesperson explained. “F-150 Lightning, America’s best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today’s customer needs.”

Ford’s CEO Jim Farley said that the new EV strategy will be a major turning point for sure. It will be similar to the company’s historic Model T moment. The automaker is expected to share more information on this strategy soon. However, the primary focus will be on the low-cost EV platform.
