Autonomous cars are taking over several aspects of the industry. The modern driver can take their hands off the steering for a couple of seconds while the car is able to alert of impending danger with precise accuracy, welcome to the world of automated driving systems.

And while at it, think of a camera that looks you (the driver) in the eye and sends you a warning or a signal if you dare shut down in sleep or look away dangerously too long. That is now found in the Cadillac’s Super Cruise which was ranked by the Consumer Report as best in driver automated systems.

The report further placed Tesla’s Autopilot on position two, while Nissan’s ProPilot, and Volvo’s Pilot Assist came in third and fourth respectively. Consumer Report based the rankings on five criteria that included capability and performance, ease of use, clarity on when safety, driver engagement, and how they alerted or handled if a driver isn’t alert.

One of the cautions that Consumer Report highlighted is that the ranking should not be used as a way of embracing some and discrediting the other, but rather a means to evaluate how much the driver and the technology are able to produce great outcome. The general industry direction is that automation is taking a huge chunk of machine operations.

In this respect, such evaluations ought to be made frequent as a way of offering guidance and deeper insight from an external observer.
