Japan’s First Female Prime Minister Reportedly Drives a Mk 3 Toyota Supra
Few leaders are known for their cars, but Sanae Takaichi’s love for a vintage Toyota tells a different story. Her timeless Supra reflects passion, pride, and a deep connection to Japan’s roots.
Japan’s new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, is not only known for breaking political barriers but also for her surprising taste in cars. While most leaders are seen in black sedans or luxury limousines, Takaichi’s favorite ride is a Mk 3 Toyota Supra Turbo, a true icon from the 1990s.
Her story with the Supra began long before her political rise. Born in Nara Prefecture, Takaichi worked hard from an early age and made her way into politics in 1993. But before she became a well-known figure, she had already achieved one of her personal dreams. At around 30 years old, she saved enough to buy her first new car, a Toyota Supra. Her father’s company had ties with Toyota, which made the decision even more meaningful for her.

The car she chose was stunning. Finished in Super White Pearl Mica with a burgundy leather interior, it came with a 1JZ-GTE twin-turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that produced 276 horsepower. It was stylish, fast, and elegant. Takaichi often drove it during her early campaigns, traveling between cities while building her career.
As she climbed higher in politics, her lifestyle changed and she began to use government transport. Still, she never sold her Supra. Instead, she kept it stored safely in Nara. Years later, local Toyota technicians decided to restore the car out of respect for her loyalty to it.
Today, her beautifully restored Supra sits on display at a Toyota dealership museum in Nara. For many, it represents not just her love for cars but also her appreciation for Japan’s automotive culture and her roots.
