One Of The Most Respected Jobs Is Being A Surgeon Here’s Why

What it takes to be a top-notch surgeon

What does it take to be a top surgeon? A select set of skills and training, including knot-tying. One of the most common-used skills needed by surgeons is basic knot tying and practicing can be done with a simple training board and string.

We show you the one-handed tie technique. You start out with multicolored pieces of yarn (white and purple for this demonstration) so you can keep track of the path of your knot that you’re tying.

The knot will consist of tying two knots with one forehand throw and one backhand throw, which is visually demonstrated in the video above. Starting with the forehand throw, take the white string in your left hand and the cross over with your purple string with a strong overhand throw.

Then using your purple string you’re going to create a 4 shape with your white string, then take your index finger and go through the 4 and loop the purple tail through. Then take your right hand and left hand pull the knot to the center of the practice board to pull the knot down.

For the backhand throw, return your string to the neutral starting position. It sounds a bit odd but you make a karate chop motion in the same 4 shape as the forehand throw. Then with your right hand with the purple string under the white string, then use your middle finger to pull the tail through the 4 shape.

To close the knot cross your hands while tying the string to naturally twist and then you alternate between the forehand and backhand throw depending on the size of the suture. This knot is used for medical purposes including sewing arteries onto a heart and closing up a cut with stitches.
