This is Why Volkswagen Is Excited About The ID Nameplate

Folks down in Germany and specifically at the Volkswagen Group must be a happy lot owing to the performance of the formidable Volkswagen I.D. R electric racecar. This is the vehicle responsible for breaking a 20-year-old record in an astonishing stamping power.

The annual Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb was the testing ground for this rather new entrant in the EV class. Under the stewardship of Romain Dumas, the I.D. R recorded a notable 41.18 seconds, dislodging former F1 driver Nick Heidfeld’s in half a second.

Nick’s record has stood unchallenged since 1999. This EV has been doing some good stuff lately.

With the same car, on June 2019, Dumas set a new record at the unforgiving Nürburgring. This is a vehicle producing a staggering 680bph and seems well placed for a good future.

The vehicle that Dumas drove was obviously heavily revamped and well suited to do its tricks. However, the focus shifts from the track performance of the VW I.D and onto its road-legal capabilities.

In several ways, the VW I.D. nameplate is right at the heart of the German marque and there have been deliberate and conceited efforts to push it to the next level. Plausible developments have so far been seen, with the I.D Buzz, ID 3, the ID Van and a number of other electric series cars getting frequent mentions.
