Ford’s Best-Selling Off-Roader Hit With Major Fire-Risk Recall

Ford is recalling more than 565,000 Broncos because some of them can catch fire under the hood.

Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall for 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs in the United States. The recall covers the 2021 through 2026 model years. The issue is a wiring problem in the engine compartment that can lead to a short circuit and ignite a fire.

This isn’t a minor issue like a software glitch or cosmetic defect. It’s a serious safety recall because it involves a possible fire risk. It’s also getting a lot of attention because the Bronco is one of Ford’s most popular vehicles, and the recall affects almost every Bronco built since it was relaunched in 2021.

According to Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the engine compartment wiring harness does not have enough protection against abrasion. Over time, the wiring can rub against nearby components and wear through its insulation. Once enough insulation wears away, the exposed wire can short-circuit.

Ford inspected more than 80 Broncos during its investigation and found signs of rubbing or chafing on the wiring harness in a few vehicles. The company estimates that only about 1% of the 565,691 recalled vehicles actually have the defect. Ford cannot identify which specific vehicles are affected without an inspection, so every Bronco is included in the recall out of caution.

Ford’s investigation also identified 15 incidents involving a fire that may have originated from the engine compartment wiring harness. These incidents occurred between October 2024 and June 2026. Eight involved standard Bronco models, and seven involved the Bronco Raptor. Ford has told NHTSA that no crashes or injuries have been linked to the issue so far.

The fix is simple and quick. Ford dealers will install additional covering over the wiring harness to protect it from rubbing and abrasion. The repair is free for every affected owner and does not involve replacing major components.

Owners of a 2021 through 2026 Ford Bronco or Bronco Raptor can check their vehicle identification number (VIN) on NHTSA’s website to see if their vehicle is included in the recall. Ford will begin mailing notification letters to affected owners starting August 24, 2026, but owners do not need to wait for the letter. Dealers can already perform the repair.

Ford has issued a large number of recalls in 2026, fixing everything from fuel pumps to seatbelts to backup cameras. Against that backdrop, the Bronco recall stands out less for its size and more for what it involves. A fire risk carries more urgency than most defects, and it is appearing on a model line that has become central to Ford’s SUV lineup.
