Hyundai Recalls 94,622 Genesis Sedans in U.S. Over Power-Seat Fire Risk

A faulty power-seat switch can potentially start a fire even when the vehicle is parked.
Hyundai Motor America has issued a recall covering 94,622 vehicles in the United States after identifying a potential fire risk involving the front power-seat system.
The recall covers certain Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 sedans produced between 2014 and 2019. According to recall information filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the affected vehicles are:
- 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis
- 2017-2020 Genesis G80
NHTSA has registered the recall under campaign number 26V664000. Hyundai’s recall number is 308, while Genesis is using recall number 035G.
The issue involves the front power-seat control switch. Hyundai says the switch can get stuck, allowing a front power-seat motor to keep running. If the motor remains active for too long, it can overheat and potentially cause a fire.
This means the risk isn’t limited to driving. A fire could occur while an affected vehicle is either parked or in operation.
Because of that risk, owners of affected vehicles are advised to park outdoors, away from buildings, other vehicles, and structures, until the recall repair is completed.
Hyundai has not issued a “Do Not Drive” instruction for the recall. However, the recommendation to park affected cars outside remains important because the identified fire risk can exist while the vehicle is parked.
The affected vehicles were manufactured from February 21, 2014, through November 7, 2019. According to Hyundai’s recall filing, the 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis accounts for 54,644 potentially affected vehicles, while the 2017-2020 Genesis G80 accounts for another 39,978 vehicles. Together, the two groups total 94,622 vehicles.
Hyundai estimates that around 1% of the recalled cars may contain the defect. That estimate does not mean only 1% of owners should take action. Owners should still have vehicles included in a safety recall checked and repaired according to the manufacturer’s instructions because an owner cannot determine the risk simply from the model year.
The issue can involve the controls that adjust the front seat position. Hyundai’s filing indicates that an external impact can dislodge or damage the power-seat control switch. The switch may then remain engaged and keep sending power to the seat motor, allowing it to overheat.
Potential warning signs include a burning smell from the front seat area or a power seat control that stops operating normally.
A permanent repair is not yet available. NHTSA’s current recall information states that the remedy is still under development. Once Hyundai finalizes the repair, affected owners can have the recall work performed at no cost.
Hyundai will begin sending owner notification letters on December 7, 2026. However, owners do not have to wait for a letter to determine whether their vehicle is included. NHTSA made Vehicle Identification Numbers associated with the recall searchable beginning October 13, 2026.
The recall applies only to specific vehicles within the listed model years, so owning a 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis or 2017-2020 Genesis G80 does not automatically mean the vehicle is affected. The most reliable way to confirm recall status is to check the vehicle’s 17-character VIN through NHTSA’s official recall database or contact an authorized dealer.
Hyundai Genesis owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Genesis owners can contact Genesis customer service at 844-340-1200 for information about the campaign.
Hyundai reported the recall to NHTSA on October 8, 2026, and it remains active while Hyundai develops the final repair. Owners should continue checking official Hyundai, Genesis, and NHTSA recall information for updates rather than assuming the issue is resolved before their vehicle receives the required repair.
