The Four Phases of a Migraine
Feel a migraine coming on? Here’s what to expect.
Migraines definitely rank up there as one of the most un-fun things that can happen to your body on a regular basis. It’s telling that you’re one of the lucky ones if all you end up with is an excruciating headache for a few hours. For those of you who aren’t so lucky, here are the four phases of a full-on migraine and what to expect in each. Knowing may not prevent them, but it might at least make them a little easier to weather.
First is the Prodrome. This phase could last anywhere to a couple of hours to a few days. The initial warning signs include sudden mood swings, fatigue, weird cravings, muscle aches, and sensitivity to light. If you’re experiencing more than one of these symptoms at once for a prolonged time, then congratulations, you have a migraine in your future.
Second is the Aura. This is where things get a little weird. Your vision may become spotty and blurry, or you could start seeing little geometric shapes. You may even see flashing lights or lose vision in one side entirely. Don’t worry, it’ll come back. This phase usually lasts around an hour, so if you can still steer yourself, start getting ready for what’s next.
Third is the Headache. This is the unpleasant part, and you could be dealing with it for up to three days, so strap in. You may experience throbbing pain, usually localized to one point on your head. Try not to move, or it’ll hurt more. Don’t be surprised if you feel nausea or the need to puke. Just stay in bed, keep the lights down low and loud noises away, and try to rest.
Finally, the Postdrome, also known as the “Migraine Hangover.” You’re almost out, though this could take anywhere from one to two days. You might have some leftover symptoms, as well as loss of appetite and difficulty concentrating. To speed up recovery, try relaxing things like yoga and soft music, and drink a lot of water. With any luck, you should be back up to speed in no time.
