From South Africa Comes A Rat-Rod Out Of A ’76 FJ Land Cruiser

Huge, Fantastic, And Weird Looking

Can anyone pick a bone with the Toyota Land Cruiser? Not as much if any. Since they came around in the 1970s, they’ve performed commendably well, getting updated with time. They are hardy and steadfast, to say the least.

It, therefore, happens that when South Africa’s Allers Rods & Customs decided to build a rat rod using the body of a 1975 Land Cruiser, it came out as magnificently as we’d have loved it. Forget the weirdo looks.

The body is probably only too conspicuous but the company used lots of more parts from other manufacturers too with the exception of the front suspension which was entirely built in-house. The Land Rover Discovery brought in a set of widened wheels and differential.

The Jeep Wrangler donated the seats while the headlights were plucked out of VW Golf 1. From the Lexus came the radio, Momo steering wheel, and a roll cage to keep everything, including the driver, safe in transit.

Power is derived from, a 300 hp 1UZ Lexus V8. Memories were kept intact with original 1976 Toyota paint codes, keeping the Land Cruiser in sync with its roots. The builders say it took a helluva 1,200 hours to assemble this road beast, adding that their mission was to represent the hot rod scene in South Africa by creating something that was a proper home-grown rod.

What came out was this impressive and unique monster. A job is well done, right?
