The Ford Bronco is making a coming back in 2021

The Ford Bronco started it’s humble beginnings in 1966 and is making a comeback for 2021 with some safety upgrades. Recently patents filed by Ford indicate the new Bronco will include new safety features including a removable rollcage, roof, and doors (similar to the Jeep Wrangler).

One of the main safety issues with the doors being removed from the vehicle compromises safety when in a car accident, but Ford plans to make removable doors provide more protection in case of an accident. The patent reveals they will be utilizing a telescopic section in the door panel that extends from the A-pillar to protect passengers in an accident if the doors are removed and the telescopic sections will be retracted during normal driving conditions.

In the case of an accident, an inflator will active to deploy extending crash barriers that prevent passengers from falling out of the vehicle and airbags will activate when barriers are deployed. If this new design proves to be successful, Ford will have a safety advantage over their competition.

Ford plans on unveiling the new 2021 Bronco at the New York Auto show in April. The new model plans on offering two- and four-door configurations for a versatile off-roading vehicle.

The new Bronco will feature the standard engine featured in the Ranger, the EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbo-four engine that boasts 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque for the hauling capability of up to 7,500 pounds. The possible V-6 option with a 2.7- or 3.5-liter twin-turbo unit with a 10-speed automatic transmission found in the Ranger and F-150 truck. They have yet to confirm whether they will be offering a hybrid version but with the ongoing auto trends, it’s easy to say they just might.
