The Opel Insignia GSi, is touted as Opel’s return to the sports saloon slot in the market lately left vacant by the old Insignia OPC. Whereas the old OPC came with one engine choice – a powerful and thirsty twin-turbo V6 – this time around you can have diesel power if you like.

And it’s a fair bit of power, too; 210 hp from the twin-turbo four-cylinder engine (there’s a 260 hp petrol Insignia GSi too). There’s four-wheel drive as well, a computer-controlled system that can vector torque between the two rear wheels, and a host of other niceties including LED ‘Intellilux’ lights and high-backed sports seats.

Will this car ultimately carve out a niche for itself when the market is now cluttered and competitively spiced with pricey German sports saloons? To be fair enough, it has the characteristics to make this happen.

The latest Insignia is nearly three inches longer than the last model and has a wheelbase that’s almost four inches longer, which creates more interior space and plenty of legroom in the back. That gives passengers room to stretch out, while cabin quality has been improved to add to the sense of space and comfort.

Like before, it comes as a five-door hatchback – although the extended roof line gives it more of a fastback look – while the estate version is called the Insignia Sports Tourer. The interior is also juicy with equipment that include, a touchscreen infotainment system, auto lights, heated electric door mirrors, LED tail-lights and a leather trimmed wheel included. ,

You can upgrade to sat-nav by choosing Design Nav trim, while SRi has this same option, which can be had in addition to climate control, a rear spoiler, front and rear parking sensors, auto lights, auto wipers, and ambient LED interior lighting. It is truly a rather ambitious car and one that is well poised to help things scale upwards.
