DeLorean Confirms Grand Plans To Produce Modernized DMC-12s
Restoration and modernization, small company is on a mission
Tucked deep in Humble, Texas, DeLorean Motor Company has worked hard on restoration of the legendary DeLorean DMC12s for the last two decades or so. It is important to underline that the company has no relation to the original DeLorean Motor Company of the 1980s.
Over the last couple of years, the company has faced serious regulation challenges that have forestalled its vision. But with a number of changes laws, things are bound to change for the small car maker.
The company aims to use a combination of new-old-stock (NOS) and brand-new parts, giving its vehicles as much as 350-horsepower engines. This could also see an upgrade in the interior make up, bringing on board modern audio and connectivity.
According to company executives, the new cars will conform to styles and designs of the 1981–83 originals but will gain massively from a modern touch. The laws that took effect in 2017 allows low volume manufacturers to produce 325 cars per year. Production and overall success are dependent on a number of factors, and the company is equally counting on regulators to play their part.
James Espy, vice president of DeLorean Motor Company, said, “There will be no cars produced under this legislation for at least a year, and that’s presuming the feds do their job this time and don’t drag it out for four more years,” says Espy.
