Nissan Attempts To Curve A New Category With The IMs Concept

Among giant automakers who have been keen to underscore their place in the market, Nissan has made commendable strides. In spite of tumultuous and challenging times, the Japanese automaker has continued to keep a sharp focus on the future.

It has constantly unleashed futuristic concepts that, if and when they hit the market will have a huge impact on its overall performance. The Nissan IMs unveiled recently at the Detroit Auto Show 2019, has been hailed by many as one the best EV cars presented so far.

Carrying one of the biggest batteries ever at 115 KW, it is easy to see why this is not just another futuristic idea but a revolutionary one. The IMs concept features all-wheel drive.

It has two motors, each to power an axle. Both motors produce 483 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The 115-kilowatt-hour battery pack mounted under the floor is said to provide 380 miles of range.

One of the eye-catching technology involved in the building of this vehicle is the air suspension system which, along with the low center of gravity provided by the floor-mounted battery pack, allows the IMs to corner sharply and ride comfortably. Whereas the IMs is a four-door sedan, with a pair of normal bucket seats upfront it has been built in such a way that the rear bench seat can convert from a conventional three-across setup into what Nissan calls the “Premier Seat.”

What does this mean? Precisely, the outboard seats fold away, leaving an over-sized center seat for one person. This would go along very well with VIP passengers and chauffeur driven passengers.

Nissan calls this category of vehicles the “elevated sports sedan.” From the look of things, the company has attempted to break into a field in which it competes with companies with a sole focus on EV’s.

Of course Tesla has similar or close breeds of cars but Nissan, being the giant it is and a plateful of other models to handle, the IMs concept should give it mileage.
