Tesla Reopens Reservations for Its Long-Delayed 2nd Gen Roadster
Tesla is accepting $50,000 reservations for its next-generation Roadster, nearly nine years after it first unveiled the electric supercar.
Tesla has reopened reservations for its long-awaited 2nd-gen Roadster in the United States and Canada, ahead of its scheduled unveiling on October 1, 2026. Tesla first introduced the electric supercar in November 2017, but repeated delays have kept it from reaching production.
But now, interested buyers can reserve the upcoming Roadster before Tesla confirms its final specifications, pricing, or delivery schedule.
Tesla Roadster Reservations Require a $50,000 Deposit
According to Tesla’s reservation page, customers in the United States must make two payments to secure a reservation:
- Initial payment: $5,000 by credit card.
- Second payment: $45,000 by wire transfer within 10 days.
- Total reservation amount: $50,000.
Tesla states that reservations are not finalized until it receives the wire transfer.
The company also says that customers can cancel their reservations and receive a full refund before entering into a Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement. However, the $50,000 reservation payment does not establish the vehicle’s final purchase price.
Nearly Nine Years of Waiting for the New Roadster
Tesla first unveiled the 2nd Roadster in November 2017, with plans to begin deliveries in 2020. At the time, the company announced ambitious performance targets that would place the electric sports car among the fastest road-going vehicles.
Tesla’s originally advertised specifications of the 2nd Roadster are as follows:
- 0 to 60 mph: 1.9 seconds.
- Top speed: 250+ mph (402 km/h).
- Driving range: 620 miles (998 km).
- Originally announced starting price: $200,000.
These figures remain manufacturer claims from the original unveiling. Tesla has not confirmed whether the redesigned production Roadster will retain all these specifications or its originally announced price.
A New Tesla Roadster Reveal Is Scheduled for October 1
On September 12, Tesla announced an October 1 unveiling through its official social media account, sharing a teaser image with the message “Go for launch.”
The event is scheduled to take place in Texas and is expected to provide a closer look at the redesigned Roadster.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also discussed the possibility of using SpaceX-developed cold-gas thrusters to improve the car’s performance. However, the company has not confirmed whether this technology will be available on the production model or demonstrated at the upcoming event.
When Will the Second-Generation Tesla Roadster Enter Production?
Despite reopening reservations, Tesla has not announced a confirmed production start date or customer delivery schedule.
The October 1 event is expected to provide further information about the vehicle’s design, performance, pricing, and manufacturing plans.
For now, the reopening of reservations marks another development in Tesla’s long-running Roadster project. The upcoming unveiling will be an important opportunity for the company to clarify what customers can expect from its next-generation electric supercar.
