The last time the Explorer received a major redesigning was in 2011. Back then,the popular SUV adopted car-like unibody construction and an inline-4 as the base powertrain.

And now,the 2020 model will follow a similar formula, though it but it will put in some more muscle and grow in size. The 2020 Explorer will be one of the first models to ride on Ford’s next-generation platform for larger models that has been code-named D6.

It is a highly flexible platform that accommodates front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive configurations.

The Explorer will ride on a rear-wheel-drive configuration but offer all-wheel drive. This configuration was also used by Lincoln on the Aviator, also coming around in 2020.

With a 3.3-liter V-6 paired with an electric motor, it achieves an estimated EPA combined rating of 24 mpg. The base powertrain is expected to be a turbocharged inline-4. However, a naturally- aspirated 3.3-liter V-6 is expected to come around. Hybrid options will also carry the 3.3-liter power bank.

The impressive Explorer ST will replace the current Explorer Sport, which comes with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 giving 365 horsepower. The Explorer ST’s engine is expected to be a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 with able to ride all the way to 400 hp.

From the specs and all other information around, it is evident that this is vehicle that is bent on riding powerfully without leaving a sense of style too far from its walls.
