It has the blessings of Porsche Executive Board, but how will it perform?

Some stories we come across regarding supercars can get really intriguing. But we like them like that because they light up our world and give enthusiasts some more banter to kill the boring evenings.

In 2015, there Porsche 909 Hillclimb vehicle that was celebrating the 50th anniversary became the company’s lightest race car to have ever been produced. It bore the name ‘Bergspyder’ or ‘Mountain Spyder’ when loosely translated.

Its curb weight was 384 kg (847 pounds) only. Following its unbroken record, this car was to receive a befitting memorial when Porsche’s Executive Board commissioned an exceptional special built on the same specs as the Boxster Spyder.

This means even the white and green colors would be on board just like the 909. Importantly, it had to shed as much weight as possible.

The project finally happened and kept from the public eye for as long as Porsche found fit. In 2019, this car is gracing the 2019 Gaisberg Hillclimb race. This is really good stuff that will give us fodder for a long time.

The focus, as earlier stated is weight matters. It is supposed to be ultra-light measured against the Porsche 909. The Bergspyder weighs about 2,423 pounds (1,099kg) but it is still considered a light car in many ways.

It has managed to keep the weight under check primarily by shedding off the roof, the windscreen, and even the passenger seat is now replaced by a storage element for the racing helmet.

The engine sitting right behind the driver is a naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six just as found in the 909 and the and the Cayman GT4. This engine generates 393bhp used by the rear wheels and attached to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Porsche anticipated that Bergspyder would do the Nurburgring circuit (12.9miles) in a record seven minutes and 30 seconds. This makes it a little faster than the 600bhp 997-generation 911 GT2.
