On the list of true off-road cruisers that have made a huge impact on some of the world’s harshest rough roads, the Mitsubishi Pajero out rightly deserves a mention. It is now bowing out, with a special edition of about 700 vehicles set for production in preparation for this exit.

It has been 37 years of reliable off-road performance by the huge, rugged SUV, but the automaker has announced that its discontinuation, particularly in its home market Japan. Some markets will, however, enjoy limited exports of the long-running nameplate.

The final edition is based on the nameplate’s highest trim dubbed the Exceed. It brings along features such as a power sunroof and roof rails, leather upholstery (in black or ivory), powered front seats and illuminated ‘Final Edition’ sill plate

Optional Final Edition Accessory Package brings a rear spoiler, cover for the spare as well as mud flaps with Pajero badging. The privileged buyers of the final edition further get special stickers and a Mitsubishi-branded watch by Citizen.

This monster rides on a 3.2-liter turbo-diesel making 190 horsepower(140kW) and 441Nm. It is affixed to a five-speed automatic and selectable four-wheel-drive system with locking rear differential.

The price tag for the Mitsubishi Pajero Final Edition begins at $57,624.99 in Japan. The dashboard is also nicely initiative and is gifted a seven-inch display for the infotainment system.

The exit of the humongous Mitsubishi Pajero brings to an end an era of a characteristically outstanding car. It is not clear yet what the automaker plans going forward but this is an interesting space to watch moving forward.
