Peugeot Plans A Hybrid Hypercar For Le Mans 24 In 2022

Peugeot plans to come back in style and making a big statement.

After missing in action for quite some time, Peugeot is finally making plans to come back to return to the top tier of endurance racing in 2022. This time, the company is readying a hypercar program in the FIA World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24 Hours.

It is going full throttle, planning to contest in the 2022/23 WEC schedule culminating at Le Mans. It is quite a familiar territory, having worn the showpiece event three times, with a hybrid-based contender.

Without giving as many details, PSA motorsport director Jean-Marc Finot said: “I am very excited at the prospect of channeling the skills and passion of my team into this project.” Adding that, “It is a new challenge and I know our experts will rise to it with another demonstration of their will to win with teams financed by the [PSA] Group’s brands, fuelled by their long experience of top-flight FIA championships and hunger for success.”

The last time the marque contested in the challenge was between 2007 and 2011. Back then it had a diesel-powered 908 HDi FAP, with which it won the 2009 edition. It developed a hybrid version of the car that never quite saw the light of day.

A Peugeot hypercar for the WEC is no doubt a major boost to the championship. Toyota and Aston Martin are the other major contestants that have confirmed participation but it is expected that others will come on board soon.
